A national competition was held, attracting a staggering 724 poems from across the country [2†L29-L30]. However, the poet Mehmet Âkif Ersoy, a man who had personally witnessed the suffering of war and was deeply passionate about the cause, refused to initially submit his work unless there was no monetary prize [7†L25-L27].
