Have you walked away...

  • ...from software that has lots of complex menus that are daunting?
  • ...from software that generates fancy shapes, and do not give you time to think why?
  • ...from seminars of software bewildered by the amount of stuff you need to know?

  • Do you work for simple folks and not divas? Are you wanting to do a really good job as an architect, without fancy showy stuff? Do you work in the rough and tumble of a developing country, with no standard components?

Do you want to design real fast and leave the rest to juniors at your office? And trust that they'll draft the drawings accurately without your supervision?

Then TAD is what you really need. It is free!

TAD originated at a small architect's office in India in 1989. It is a different approach to BIM (Building Information Modelling) from what you may have seen elsewhere. It is based on fundamental architectural research. It is not a software that was derived from other engineering fields and then modified to suit architects.

Since it is so much in touch with what architects really do, it is extremely efficient in doing it. The file-sizes of this BIM software are literally in kilobytes.

At the same time it has extensive querying capabilities. The architect can actually get objectivity from quite early on -- almost from the bubble-diagramming stages. For example; quantities, area calculations, municipal (local government) calculations and so on. Such capability can even be extended using add-ons (probes)

The cover image and the two images below are those of a small row-house at Kopar Khairane Navi Mumbai, India designed entirely in TAD. In fact, all the projects shown on this page are all done in TAD

Here is what Dr Kartikeya Date; research fellow at Haifa has to say about TAD:

I know the TAD system quite well, and it is an improvement on BIM in that in enables imprecise models to be represented to a far greater extent than BIM does. This is not surprising, since TAD is actually developed for architects and for architectural design, while BIM is developed for the AEC industry broadly and is now essentially a standard (via IFCs) for the industry and architects use it for design for reasons of productivity (for the same bad reason that they were consumers of AutoCAD back in the day).

We all live in spaces. They are important to us!

When designing, we need to be in touch with the various spaces we use. After all, we are not termites -- who live inside built matter of the walls. An architect is quite interested in knowing how the spaces are inter-related, and whether they would work for our users. The walls come as a bye-product of having made these spaces.

TAD respects such an approach. That is why it is very easy to start designing directly in TAD itself. It is like having a scratch pad handy.

But if you think this is just a bubble diagramming too ... well, it is not. You can  even create the entire model; including the built matter that is present in the building.

What it does NOT do is drafting. For that, you can easily export from TAD and use the regular CAD software that you were using earlier.

The adjoining photo shows the internal stack through the tiny row-house. The west wall has a bit of glass blocks. It not just lights up the space but it drives the air inside the stack. This is a intricate vertical space that goes through the row house to provide ventilation -- all modelled inside TAD

Analyse and get values at all stages. Not just at the final stage of design

TAD helps you iteratively design. Like a potter at work. At any point in time, you can extract objective information such as areas, distances and so on. What is the point of designing a building only to realize at the final stages that some mathematical criteria was not right?

This capability of querying into the design is very powerful. TAD has a built in language called "ARDELA" (ARchitectural DEsign LAnguage) That can be used to create add-ons to provide additional querying functionality. These add-ons probe into your model and provide  you answers.

We would be releasing a marketplace for these probes -- and also a simple way for you to write your own probes too

The adjoining photo, a small gazebo kind of space was carved out on the terrace on one part of the split-level in the rowhouse. An ARDELA area add-on (probe) did all the calculations. We were then confident that we can get that semi-enclosed space, without it being counted by the municipality (in India, these area calculations are known as FSI calculations)

Moreover, animal behavior is closely linked to animal welfare. Veterinarians have a responsibility to ensure that animals in their care are treated humanely and with respect. By understanding animal behavior, veterinarians can provide enrichment programs, socialization, and housing that meet the behavioral needs of animals, promoting their overall welfare.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) like clomipramine are frequently prescribed for severe separation anxiety, compulsive disorders, and territorial aggression. These medications do not sedate the animal; instead, they lower the emotional baseline of panic so that behavior modification protocols can actually take effect. 5. Veterinary behaviorists emphasize: “Treat the medical problem first, then address learned or primary behavioral disorders.”

For decades, veterinary science and animal behavior were treated as distinct disciplines. A veterinarian fixed the body; an ethologist (or trainer) fixed the mind. However, modern veterinary practice has begun to embrace a crucial reality: you cannot treat the body effectively without understanding the mind that inhabits it. zooskool 250 2021

Combining behavioral science with veterinary practice is essential for modern animal care. It moves beyond just physical health to address the psychological well-being of animals, which directly influences medical outcomes and the human-animal bond. The Role of Behavior in Veterinary Science

A foundational framework for observing behavior centered on fighting, fleeing, feeding, and reproduction.

One of the team members, a young veterinarian named Dr. Juan, became particularly interested in the health of the monkeys. He began to work closely with the team to monitor the health of the troop, conducting regular check-ups and collecting data on their behavior and physiology. Moreover, animal behavior is closely linked to animal

Addressing behavioral issues like aggression or anxiety is a core part of preventive care, as these are leading reasons why owners surrender pets. Core Academic and Professional Focus

The integration of animal behavior and veterinary science has fundamentally changed how we care for domestic animals. By viewing medicine through the lens of behavior, veterinary professionals ensure that our animals live lives that are both physically healthy and emotionally fulfilled.

Modern veterinary science advocates for "Fear Free" or "Low-Stress Handling" techniques. These include:

Habituation occurs when an animal stops reacting to a harmless, repeated stimulus, like traffic noise. Sensitization happens when a stimulus causes an increasingly intense reaction, such as a worsening fear of thunderstorms. Owners may administer veterinary-prescribed calming supplements or medications at home before traveling to the clinic.

In veterinary science, behavior is often the first clinical sign of a physical ailment. A cat that stops grooming might be suffering from arthritis; a dog that becomes suddenly aggressive might be experiencing neurological pain. By integrating behavioral science, veterinarians can diagnose underlying medical issues much faster than through physical exams alone. Why Behavior Matters in the Clinic

For far too long, we architects have not asked ourselves how we may do a better job in this world. Instead we just relied on some outside expertise and hand-me-downs. Let us rise and think for ourselves.
