While official, standardized versions of the Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test
The Bender-Gestalt Test was first published in 1938 by Lauretta Bender, a psychiatrist, to assist in psychological, neurological, and educational assessments. It is based on the work of Gestalt psychologist Max Wertheimer, who used geometric designs to study the principles of visual perception. While Wertheimer asked participants to describe the designs, Bender had them copy them with a pencil and paper. Her initial monograph on the test, titled "A Visual Motor Gestalt Test and Its Clinical Use," can be downloaded for free in its entirety from the Internet Archive. The original test kit is simple. It consists of nine (sometimes ten) individual index cards, each printed with a distinct black geometric design. The cards are labeled "A" and numbers 1 through 8. Each design presents a unique visual-motor challenge, ranging from simple to increasingly complex organizational tasks.
However, downloading or utilizing free PDFs of active psychological testing materials comes with significant legal, ethical, and clinical hurdles. 1. Copyright Laws
