The turning point comes when Maria is given one of Jon's paintings. This act exposes his art to the townspeople, attracting the attention of a museum director, local newspapers, and a television crew. The sudden spotlight and invasion of his privacy are overwhelming for the reclusive Jon, who violently throws the TV crew out of his home. Only Maria can calm him down, and she helps him put on his coat as he is taken away to a care home. The film ends with Maria returning to her mother, having matured from her experience.
