The General stepped down from the platform, his boots squelching in the mud. He walked until he was mere paces from the man. Meng Yi spoke in the dialect of Xianyang, the capital. "You build in stone? The Emperor builds in earth and wood. Stone is for the dead. Why do you build for the dead in the land of the living?" Vibol looked at him, surprised. "You learn fast, for a man of the North." In his seminal work The Roots of Old Chinese , linguist Laurent Sagart argued that Old Chinese was “" where only faint traces of the old morphology remain. In the world of linguistics and history, languages are rarely static, and they are usually defined by their geographic and ethnic origins. Linguists have reconstructed the sound system of Old Proponents of this theory usually argue one of three variations: So while some Qin refugees migrate south and intermix with local Austroasiatic populations (especially in northern Vietnam), they did not “become” the Khmer. Instead, they were assimilated into the local language communities, not the other way around. So, did the Qin Empire "speak Khmer"? No. The Qin court spoke Old Chinese, a Sinitic language. However, the idea that the Qin Empire spoke Khmer is a conflation of several complex truths: He walked until he was mere paces from the man The Qin dynasty was characterized by a push for unity. However, this did not equate to a uniform spoken language. If the evidence is so clear, why do people still ask “Did the Qin Empire speak Khmer?” Three major sources of confusion fuel this idea: : The Qin Empire was centered in northern China, specifically the Wei River valley (modern Shaanxi province).
