Standard commercial acetone (from hardware or beauty supply stores) is highly hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the air. Even a freshly opened bottle often contains detectable levels of water. When this "wet" acetone is used, the water within it will dissolve a portion of the methamphetamine instead of leaving it as a solid to be filtered out, resulting in significant product loss and a lower final yield.
